My Garden from the Ground Up

These photos give you an idea of how I started my garden from the very beginning.  My husband and I worked endlessly at creating it, and we did every bit of the work with the exception of the pavers which we did hire someone out to do.  After doing some research it was just way to complicated and time consuming for us to do alone.  Glad we had that bit of the garden done by someone else too, as it was during the middle of summer, and excruciatingly HOT!  Hope you enjoy this compilation of garden photos.

These are the fence pieces that I purchased.  We completely disassembled them, cut them down, created the scallop, re-assembled and stained them white.  PHEW what a job that was.  Of course when we put them back together again, we reenforced them better than the original boards, because of the hot humid weather here in FL, I didn't want to risk warping of the fence pieces.  Each piece has approximately 4 screws in them, two top and two bottom.

Creation of the scalloped look.

More fence building pictures.

I had just turned the beds from original position, and waited until the right lower hand corner bed was finished producing before moving it.  It took quite a bit of grading, raking and pulling grass to keep the weeds from popping back up in the dirt, but I managed with some help of round-up :-)

I placed thick double layer plastic under the raised beds, and solarized the soil during the hottest part of summer.  I kept the plastic very tight, and attempted to keep it sealed as best as I could.  This is to help with nematodes, and other diseases and pests by essentially baking them.  According to the UF website, the heat of the sun can penetrate up to 6" in the soil.  I did this BEFORE placing the good soil in the boxes.

  1. I just wanted to tell you that you have inspired me. We are relocating to your area in April and I had begun to wonder if any veggies would grow there. We have always gardened and felt it would take years to learn to grow anything other than citrus! Figured we would just haunt the Farmer's Mkts. Perhaps we could come and see your gardens once we get settled! BTW, I am also an RN. I found your blog via Pinterest!

    1. Thank you so much for the kind words! Your absolutely welcome to come see the garden. It's really all a matter of timing and choosing the right varieties for this area but absolutely doable. Just ask me any questions you may have I'm always willing to share what information I have. Talk soon!

  3. HI Katherine! I LOVE your garden! My hubby and I bought a place in Buckingham and I started my raised beds last year, using as much organic materials I could (goat manure, chicken manure, and soon some of my neighbors horse manure). We have gutted our home to the brick walls and have spent most of our time and $$ renovating it but a garden like yours is what I am striving for in the future. I ran across your blog last night while doing more research on 'amendment' ideas for our soil and was excited to see that you were as inspired by Mel Bartholomew as I was.

Is there any way we can privately communicate? Not sure how to give you my email without posting it online.

    Best wishes!!! Nancy
